News
London Residential
9th-11th June 2026 - An update on the upcoming residential trip: During the visit, pupils will enjoy a show in London, take a sightseeing river cruise, visit the Science Museum, and spend a day at Legoland. The cost of the trip is £150, which covers all activities, travel, accommodation, and meals. Further details regarding payments and schedules will be provided in due course.
National Child Measurement Programme
Year 6 children will soon take part in the National Child Measurement Programme. The Growing Healthy Sunderland 0–19 Public Health Service offers health screening to all school-aged children, and Year 6 will be included in this year’s programme. If you are happy for your child to be measured, no action is needed. If you do not want your child’s height and weight to be checked, or if your child has a medical condition that may affect their measurements, please contact the team using the details provided in the letter emailed to parents and shared on Class Dojo. Children will not be made to take part if they do not wish to on the day.
Rearranged Parent Consultations
Parental consultations will be held on Friday 21st November to discuss each child’s progress so far in Year 6. Appointment slots are available to book through Arbor, with times offered from 7:30 to 16:15 to provide maximum flexibility.
Eden Camp
Autumn Term 1 Visit - The class will be visiting Eden Camp, a World War Two museum in North Yorkshire. This visit (30.9.2025) will link with the work the children have been doing in class and give them the opportunity to explore a wide range of exhibits and artefacts from the era.

Great Science Research

Explore Evolution
Fabulous research this afternoon from Year 6 as they learned about mutation, natural selection, evolution and peppered moths.
Great effort and enthusiasm shown throughout.
World Book Day "Book in a Box"
Children have created a 3D “Book in a Box” inspired by a story of their choice. Their imaginative designs bring favourite books to life using colour, layers and creativity.
Charles Darwin
Year 6 learned about adaptation and how Charles Darwin discovered that animals survive when suited to their environment, using different tools as bird beaks to explore how finches gather food.
William Morris
Year 6 enjoyed an art lesson inspired by William Morris. They explored patterns and nature designs and showed great creativity and focus.
African Drumming
Year 6 started African drumming in music today and had a fantastic lesson exploring rhythm, pulse, and teamwork. The children showed great focus and enthusiasm as they learned new patterns and worked together to create powerful beats.

Stockled Park
What an amazing day at Stockeld Park! The children had a fantastic time exploring, playing, and making wonderful memories together. Everyone showed great enthusiasm and teamwork — a truly brilliant day!
Newton's Wheel
We made Newton’s wheel and discovered that when it is spun quickly, all the colours blend together to form white light. These colours can be separated again using a prism — just like we see in rainbows!
Shadows
Year 6 have been busy investigating shadows and discovering how they change in shape and size as they move closer to or further away from a light source.
Periscope
In science, we continued learning about light and discovered that it travels in straight lines but can reflect off shiny surfaces. We then built a periscope, using two mirrors to reflect light so we could see over objects and around corners.
Light
In Science, Year 6 have been learning about how light travels in straight lines and how it is reflected into our eyes. To investigate this, we used a torch and three pieces of card, each with a hole in the centre. When the holes were perfectly aligned, the beam of light travelled straight through all three—clearly showing that light moves in straight lines. Fantastic work, Year 6!
SafetyWorks!
Year 6 had a fantastic visit to SafetyWorks!, where they took part in a range of engaging, hands-on scenarios designed to teach them how to stay safe in everyday situations.
Blood!
In Year 6, we created our own model of blood! Using cereal, marshmallows, purple pom-poms and red and yellow food colouring, we represented the different components of blood — including red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma.
Musical Patterns
In Music, we’ve been composing our own rhythmic patterns. First, we learned how to draw each musical note and understand the number of beats it represents. Then, using our knowledge of fractions, we created our own 4-second rhythms — a challenging but exciting task!
Eden Camp
Year 6 had a fantastic day at Eden Camp, where they immersed themselves in the sights, sounds and stories of World War II. Their enthusiasm and curiosity made the visit truly memorable.
Netball Shooting Practice
As part of our netball PE lesson, we dedicated time to practising our shooting skills. The children focused on aiming and accuracy, building their confidence with every shot.
Netball
What a fantastic PE lesson we had! We began by warming up our muscles with some fun and active stretches, making sure our bodies were ready to move. Then we got stuck into practising our netball skills, focusing on passing, footwork, and teamwork. Everyone gave it their all and had a brilliant time!
Goodnight Mister Tom
Hazel Class have begun reading 'Goodnight Mister Tom' and have already explored the first chapter. The children are really engaging with the story, discussing the characters and setting, and are looking forward to finding out what happens next.
Fabulous Work
In our first few days of Year 6, we’ve already produced some fantastic work in English, maths, and history.
First Music Lesson
Hazel Class had their first music lesson of the year, and it was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone!

Year 6 are getting into the Halloween spirit by exploring The Addams Family theme using a variety of percussion instruments. They’ve been experimenting with spooky rhythms and dramatic sound effects to bring the iconic music to life.

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
Hazel Class have been thoroughly enjoying their singing lessons with Jen. They have loved learning new songs, including the classic Ain’t No Mountain High Enough. The children sing with such enthusiasm and energy, and their voices sound absolutely wonderful together. Here’s a little snippet of their performance for you to enjoy!

Top Marks - Top Marks offers a wide range of fun and interactive games and activities that help support learning in maths and English. These resources are free to access at home and are a great way for children to practise their skills while having fun.
Letter-Join - To help children develop clear and confident handwriting, we use the Letter-join programme in regular handwriting sessions. We adapt the activities where needed to make sure they suit the needs of every child. The great news is that Letter-join can also be used at home! If you would like the login details, just let us know and we’ll be happy to share them with you.
Reading Plus - We use an online resource called ' Reading Plus to provide an additional opportunity for children to reinforce and apply what they've learnt in reading at home.
BBC Bitesize - Use BBC Bitesize to help with your homework, revision and learning from KS1 to GCSE. Find free videos, step-by-step guides, activities and quizzes.
Times Tables Rockstars - Times Tables Rock Stars is a maths platform where children practice times tables with games that adapt to their needs, boosting fluency and recall.
