Investigating Shadows and Light

After a week of sunshine during half term, the clouds hid the sun today, so we couldn't see our shadows very well outside. Instead, we used torches indoors to investigate how different materials affect light and shadows.

We explored opaque, translucent and transparent objects, making predictions before shining our torches on them. We discovered that opaque objects made dark shadows, translucent objects created faint or coloured shadows, and transparent objects made little or no shadow at all. It was a great way to learn how light travels through different materials! ☀️🔦

Investigating Light and Reflection

Today, we discovered that light travels in straight lines and explored how it reflects from shiny surfaces like foil and mirrors. 🔦✨
We experimented with changing the direction of light, created exciting “mirror corners,” and played reflection games to aim light at targets for points! 🎯

Investigating Light

We began our new science topic on light by sorting objects into natural sources, artificial sources, and non-light sources.
We discovered some surprises, like the moon reflecting sunlight rather than producing its own, and learned about bioluminescence in animals such as anglerfish and fireflies.

Tennis Skills in Action

Today, the children practised their forehand and backhand swings, developing control and coordination.
They also showed great spatial awareness and teamwork while throwing and catching—fantastic effort from everyone!

Well Done Poplar Class

A huge well done to our amazing Year 2/3 class! This week, the children have worked incredibly hard to complete their assessments, showing determination, focus, and a brilliant attitude to learning.
We are so proud of each and every one of them – they truly blew us away with their fantastic results! 🎉
To celebrate all their effort and success, the class has earned a well-deserved games afternoon. 🎲 We are having a lot of fun together!

A Lovely Afternoon Out

We enjoyed a wonderful trip to the park and are excited for our upcoming farm visit on the minibus.

World Book Day!

A fantastic day celebrating reading, imagination and a love of books, with creative costumes and lots of shared stories!

Today we had a fantastic time making Egyptian flatbread, carefully measuring our ingredients and following the recipe step by step.  We loved tasting our delicious creations and are really enjoying learning all about the Ancient Egyptians!

Leaf Hunt in the Sensory Garden

Today we went on a leaf hunt in the sensory garden, but quickly realised that because it’s February, most of the leaves fell off last autumn! We spotted a few willow and bamboo leaves, and even noticed that the Silver Birch tree was completely bare.

Even without many leaves to find, we’re still experts on the Silver Birch tree—just like our new school name!

Creative Printing

Poplar class designed and created their own printing blocks using cardboard, art straws, and PVA glue. They showed fantastic creativity and are excited to compare this method with polystyrene printing next week.

Great North Museum

Poplar Class had an exciting trip to learn all about the Ancient Egyptians and their fascinating history! We loved exploring the exhibits and discovering how people lived thousands of years ago.

Yoga

In our yoga session, we enjoyed practising our stretching and balancing in a calm and relaxing way.

Maps

In Geography, we recapped our knowledge of the UK. Using maps, the children showed off their amazing mapping skill

Rocks

In Science, we explored igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, learning how each type is formed. The children worked brilliantly together to compare and group the different rocks!

Dodgeball

We were lucky to have an extra P.E. session with Craig. We had great fun practising our balance and coordination skills, particularly during a lively game of dodgeball
